Let’s sort your recycling!

Let’s sort your recycling!

Attention Shire of Dardanup residents!

The Shire of Dardanup and Watch Your Waste South West are working together to help Shire of Dardanup residents improve their recycling efforts from the yellow-topped kerbside recycling bin.

Current contamination rates for the recycling bin in the Shire of Dardanup are sitting at 32% which is very high.

This means that on average 32% of the contents of each recycling bin is going to landfill.

When recycling is contaminated with food waste and items that should not be there it makes it very difficult to recover using sorting equipment and it must be sent to landfill.

This means instead of having value as a resource, it is rendered useless and attracts a further cost to landfill which is passed onto the Shire of Dardanup as a contamination charge.

Audits are conducted at the Suez Transfer Station in Picton by Suez, Shire of Dardanup and Watch Your Waste Staff to determine the average contamination rate in the recycling.

These items are removed and put in a separate bin to determine the contamination rate in the recycling and the price the Shire of Dardanup pay to process our householders waste.

The dirtier the recycling is or if there are items that shouldn’t be in the bin, they are weighed up and the percentage calculated.’

It’s time to improve your recycling habits!

In recent audits of your recycling bins, we’ve noticed that lids are often left on with liquid still inside the bottle or container.

When the truck compacts the recycling these get squashed and the liquid squirts out over the clean recycling!

Please remove all lids from jars, bottles and containers.

Small plastic lids go in your general waste bin or you can take them to a drop off point like here at Stanley Road Waste Management Facility

Large plastic lids (like from vegemite) can go into your recycling bin because they are much larger and easy to recover at the Recycling Facility.

Metal lids can also go into your recycling bin as they are recovered with a magnet.

Audits are conducted to determine what the Shire is charged to process recycling.

If the recycling is contaminated with food or it shouldn’t be in your recycling bin the higher the charge is to the Shire.

Your next audit is in a few weeks time!

Shire of Dardanup residents let’s keep improving your recycling!

Recent audits of your recycling bins show that improvements needs to be made to what you put in your recycling bin.

After removing lids, please ensure you empty and rinse bottles and containers!

Your recycling is not washed at the Material Recovery Facility in Perth it is only sorted and baled so you need to ensure it is clean to be recovered.

Recycling cannot be sorted and baled when it is dirty!

Bagged recycling is sent straight to landfill in the pre-sort. MRF workers cannot be sure what is in the bag and it could be hazardous so they cannot open it.

Electronic Waste or E-Waste cannot go into your kerbside bins

Electronic Waste must be taken to Stanley Road Waste Management Facility, Lot 45 Stanley Road, Wellesley.

💛 Electronic waste contains precious metals like gold and copper that can be recovered for reuse.

When electronic waste is sent to landfill it leaches toxic and hazardous materials into the environment and those metals are lost forever. ☣️

Electronic waste includes items such as

 Computers and Laptops
 TV’s, Printers, mobile phones
 Electric Fans
Small appliances like coffee machines and irons
 Hairdryers
